San Francisco Streets + Elevation Black

This Map's Story:
This is the final print a series of maps I created of San Francisco, visualized by overlaying streets and elevation. For this print I decided to print on black paper so that the white elevation layer could shine through without distracting from the streets. The streets are then layer on top of the elevation using a light blue to dark blue gradient. Together these layers created a textured map that evokes a somewhat ghostly depiction of the city. I like to call it "the ghost of SF's past" sometimes, or in a less morbid sense it could be a foggy depiction of SF.

Note on the Process:
The map begins with geographically accurate GIS-data of streets and elevation from the City of San Francisco. I processed these two layers in a mapping program and then smoothed them in Illustrator. Each layer was burned onto a screen at my local shop. I used these screens to hand-pull first the white halftone layer, which displays elevation by density of dots, and then the second light-blue to dark-blue gradient streets layer. Screen print is created with Speedball acrylic ink on 100lb paper.
